A photo tells of Diamond’s departure

Bob Diamond’s departure from Barclays has, predictably, led to a lot of puns. No doubt headline writers everywhere are celebrating their good fortune at receiving such an obviously mockable name, but at the same time straining their brains in an effort to avoid the most obvious gags. However, take a moment to appreciate the early goal scored by the photo editors and researchers at the FT.

Selecting the right image to go with a story is incredibly important. Photo editors search through thousands of images every day in the hunt for the right image for every story. With news breaking online, there isn’t the luxury of an afternoon to scour the archives and databases, images must be sourced quickly, but quality must not suffer.

It is for this reason, that we must laud the team at the FT for selecting this brilliant image of Bob Diamond.

The dejected look on his face is the classic pose of someone walking away. The positioning of Bob Diamond on the left, with his back partially toward us – simultaneously walking into the image, yet walking away from the viewer – tells us of his departure.

Finally, the defocused background hinting at a sparkly object just screams ‘diamond’. The photo editors have skilfully told the story and made the pun.

The posing heron

Walking through Bushy Park last week I came across a pretty rare sight: a heron sitting in a willow tree.

I like taking wildlife photos but I’m not very good at them; partly because I don’t have a telephoto lens yet, partly because I don’t want to disturb the animals, and mainly because I’m not a very good photographer.

Anyway, slowly I walked closer to the heron to see if I could get a close up.

As I approached he turned toward me but clearly decided I was neither scary nor interesting and just sat there crouching in the willow tree while I took photos of him.

I snapped away and it quickly became apparent that this particular heron is a bit of poser.

Deciding he didn’t want too many photos of him slouching, he started to stretch his neck out.

Finally, he stretched fully out, beak pointing skyward, in what is no doubt his favoured pose.

Bushy Park deer

Bushy Park deer

I was out in Bushy Park last week and managed to get close enough for this shot without scaring the deer. The one on the left is looking directly at me and is clearly unimpressed.

A cropped version will join the random header images, but I wanted to share it uncropped because I think the houses in the background frame the shot nicely.

(sub)urban fox

I’ve added a photo of a pretty tame and friendly fox to the randomly rotating header. He was hanging around by my kitchen and stood there long enough for me to dash off to grab the camera and take a fair few snaps. This is the best one, photoshopped to get the strong contrast and saturation of colour. I think it’s quite striking.(sub)urban fox
